April 13, Williamsburg

We drove to Williamsburg. The weather was cloudy and a bit chilly. But that is preferable to being rainy or swealtering. I'll take it. On Wood's suggestion, we parked at the College of William and Mary instead of closer to Colonial Williamsburg to park free. We walked into Williamsburg to discover that it was $47 dollars for an adult to tour all of the sites there. Get out of town!! We decide just to walk to the places that didn't cost money. We're the budget travellers. This is what they do to people who refuse to pay the admission price.

We walked around the town for awhile, walked into shops, you know, the whole tourist thing. We even took a break in the pew that George Washington sat in when he attended church there.

After walking around for awhile, we were ready to head back and Brad kindly suggested that we stay behind and check out the newer shops while he walked back to the car to pick us up. Caleb was fascinated by the pub named "The Fat Canary". (That's just crazy talk!) Everyone else wanted to go to the bookstore. Brad called me with a problem. He walked all the way back to the car to remember that I had the car keys. Oh man! I felt so bad for him that I bought him a chocolate bar. We started walking back to the car and we met him on the way. We walked through the campus of William and Mary which was actually a really nice walk. All this walking really wears everyone out.

We drove over to Jamestown at 5:15 and to our great disappointment, found out that Jamestown closes at 5:00. The only thing we were able to do there was use the restrooms at the visitors' center and fix the shoelaces on Caleb's shoes that Rachel and Emma had "modified." By the way, thanks Ed for helping me with Caleb's shoes. We drove back and had dinner at a Mexican place that was no where even close to as good as Cafe Rio or Bajio Grill. Disappointing.

Things we learned about the "Colonial Triangle"

  1. Go to Jamestown and Yorktown first. Apparently, the experience is more authentic.
  2. The houses that are restricted to ticket holders are open to everyone after 5:00. No actors but at least you get to go in the buildings.
  3. Make sure you have your car keys with you if you are going to the car.
