Spring Break? Woo Hoo!

For spring break this year, we decided to go on a huge trip and went to Washington, D.C. and New York City. It was a huge undertaking and we were lucky enough to have my mom and brother along for the ride too. It was a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable visit!

Caleb brought along a friend, his name is Bamboo. Here they are at the Salt Lake Airport.

We came up with this fun idea where in some of the many pictures we were sure to take, Bamboo would be hiding there. Sometimes he would be in plain sight and sometimes he would be hiding the the background. Brad's not really a gimmicky person so he wasn't completely for the idea. (Does that make me gimmicky?) So, we had Bamboo with us everywhere we went the first three days of the trip. We had rented a car, a Jeep Commander (which Emma derisively dubbed "disgusting tissue-box car") so we could go farther out of the metropolitan area. There really wasn't anything wrong with the car, it was a nice car. I guess Em is really particular about her large SUVs. Mt. Vernon? Colonial Williamsburg? Gettysburg? Bamboo was there. See if you can spot him in these pictures.

So here we are in Mt. Vernon.

Could you find him? Now here comes the sad part. On the night of the 15th, Brad and Ed took the rental car back to the airport because the rest of the trip we were going to rely on public transportation. Back at the hotel, Caleb was watching me go through my purse and he asked me where Bamboo was. I didn't have him. He then said, "Oh yeah, I left him in the back seat of the car." He didn't seem too concerned until it dawned on him that his dad and uncle just took the car back to the airport and we wouldn't see it again. He hung his head down low and huge tears started trickling out of his eyes. I called Brad and they had already dropped off the car and were at a different part of the airport waiting for the bus to the metro. It was breaking my heart to see Caleb so sad. He wasn't making a big scene, he was just sitting on the bed and crying quietly. I called the 800 number for the rental car and I spoke to someone in India. He was a nice person but really not much help. The next morning, I was able to call the rental car site directly and joy of joys, they found Bamboo! The nice woman Fed Exed him home. So unfortunately, Babmoo's trip was cut short. Caleb was just glad that this didn't turn out to be another Velveteen Rabbit type story.

So did you find Bamboo?

He's peeking through the dollhouse at Mt Vernon above Caleb's head.

He's sitting on one of the benches to the right of Caleb at Arlington.

He's peeking around the garbage can in the temple parking lot.

Two of the pictures at Gettysburg are quite obvious. The other one at the monument FDR dedicated has Bamboo sitting on the hedge to the left of the family.

He's in the stockade at Williamsburg.

Winnie-Sounds like the best trip ever! I have always thought that would be a blast. Way to go! Thanks for the b-day call. I had a great day. We spent spring break in CA with Wendy & Kevin and the kids. It was fun. We took the kids whale watching and didn't see any whales--that was lucky because all the kids were completely passed out from the dramamine we gave them! Fortunately, we saw some cool dolphins before the lights went out. Good times. I hope you guys are doing great, the pictures are fab. Becky

How fun to look at your pictures of your amazing trip! Way to go you blogger you! It looks great and I'm glad Bamboo made his way back home and isn't lost back east somewhere. Having him in the pictures took me back the days when "Where's Waldo" was big - he just needed a stripped shirt and snow hat!

I'm so excited for your blog. You are such a funny and witty writer that I'm going to look forward to each new post! How did we not know that we both planned almost the exact spring break trip? We didn't make it to Mount Vernon or to Gettysburg. You'll have to tell me everything that you did in DC so we can compare notes and so we can know what to hit next time. Because after this past trip, there will definitely be "a next time." Sorry you missed Jamestown and Yorktown. But hey, you got New York!!! What a dream vacation. Thanks for sharing and keep it up.
