Watch Your Back, Ann Curry

On Tuesday, Emma was asked along with several of her classmates to go to a local newspaper. The newspaper has a program where they give the opportunity to kids to read news stories for a local news program (when you get to the site, she's on the September 30th edition). When Em's teacher called to see if Emma was interested, one of Emma's first questions were, "Who are the other kids?" As good fortune would have it, one of the other girls was Kassie, Em's best friend since kindergarten. We drove down to Provo with the Sehestedts. They led the nine kids and the families through the labyrinth of news desks, printing presses and loading docks to the back of the building where the recording studio is located. Now let the fun begin!
Here are some things that we learned from this experience:
1. It is really important to ennunciate your words.
2. Reading from a TelePrompTer is harder than it seems.
3. Don't wear green, you'll end up just being a head floating in front of the green screen. They didn't provide that information to us beforehand. As you can see in the picture of the girls in front of the building, Kassie is wearing a green tee shirt. Due to the heroic efforts of her mom Kerri, she was able to wear a cute shirt of a different color instead of a ratty old tee shirt that the newspaper guy said he would loan her. (I would have paid money to see Kerri tearing through the mall barefoot looking for a shirt.)
4. Don't roll your eyes when you're done with the story because you're a little exasperated over how many takes you've done. (Emma roll her eyes? Inconceivable!) That will cost you another take.
5. It's really hard for two year olds to be completely silent during a taping. Another neighbor of ours, Spencer, was there and his little sister had to be taken outside. I had a wonderful time playing with her while Spencer's mom was watching him. Shana, can I keep her and Jaxon?
6. Shakes at JCWs+fun afternoon in front of a camera=time well spent.
7. When did Kassie and Emma start looking so grown up? (Cue in "Sunrise, Sunset" song now.)

The kids did a great job! Emma usually does not like to be the center of attention but she nailed her reading. I could tell that she really enjoyed herself. Kassie and Spencer did great as well. Hmm, maybe Utah has a new news team, no?

You are funny! I thought the girls did great, Spencer one the other hand looked a little nervous to me but not bad for a first timer. Thanks for babysitting, now you know why I spend most of my sundays in the halls!
P.S. Who do I owe for the shake?

What a fun memory, made better with friends. I think the girls should have worn green just for kicks!

I cannot believe how grown up Ms. Emma is looking. Thanks so much for sending out those clips -- she did an excellent job. Sure love Emma. She is definitely going places.
