Breaking in the Spring, Arches and Canyonlands

As I said in the previous post, I'm behind on my blogging. I just found out today that my brother-in-law, Sam, has been emailing Brad at work almost every day to find out when I'm going to post the pictures of our trip to Southern Utah. So Sam, sorry it's taken so long but I had other things to tend to, you know?

On the morning of the 15th, we got ready to go on our trip. We were planning on camping a couple of days so there was a lot of packing. To tell you the truth, the kids and I were a little bit worried about the camping because of the weather. It was snowing that morning. I was having visions of us huddled together inside a tent while a winter storm was raging on the other side of the canvas. We left in the early afternoon and drove very carefully down to Moab. It was cold but at least it wasn't snowing. In the morning we went to Arches National Park. The temperature was a little chilly but otherwise a pretty day.

First stop, Balancing Rock. As you will see in the subsequent pictures, Rachel and Emma have a passion for posing.

We didn't want to spend a lot of time at Arches on this trip so we only went on one hike-the Delicate Arch overlook. We usually hike directly to Delicate Arch, so this one was new to me, I recommend it.

My family, the conscientious hikers, made sure that the cairns were in order for the next group.

Hmmm, Delicate Arch looks so much larger on the license plates.

Ever since Caleb could hold rocks, Caleb has been throwing rocks. Here's Brad and Caleb, waiting to hear the thunk several hundred feet below.

Here I am at the edge of the cliff. The bottom of my feet get hot and tingly when I look down from high distances. Does that happen to anyone else?
I wonder if Brad's feet get hot?

On the way back, there was a gap that we had to cross. It was interesting to see how everyone crossed it. Brad just jumped over casually and helped Caleb find a narrow place. Rachel chose the widest place where she felt comfortable (about six feet across), and Emma did something in between. I jumped across too, but not as gracefully as Rachel did.
Brad and Caleb watching from the other side of the gap.

After Arches, we drove to Canyonlands, with a quick stop at Newspaper Rock. See what I mean by posing? I had to sneak pictures of them sometimes because anytime the camera was pointed in the general vicinity, they stopped what they were doing and posed. Funny stuff, funny stuff.

We hiked in Big Spring Canyon when we got to Canyonlands. It was one of Caleb's favorite hikes on the trip because of the rock scrambling and the small stretch of cables. The Needles District is in the background.

Back at Arches, whenever we saw a rock that looked like something, Caleb would get frustrated because he couldn't see it. If I asked him what a formation looked like, he would say something like, "Um, tall and pointy?" So one of the pictures below is of Brad showing Caleb what he thinks a particular rock looks like and the other picture is of the head Caleb saw in the rock. Can you see it?

Although the weather was beautiful, the forecast was for snow that night. So, we drove to Monticello and got a hotel room. It was a wise choice.

I loved those pictures. Your family is great and so expressive. Looks like so much fun, and please, please, please, step away from the ledge!

Alright, TAKE me to Yellowstone. The Millers have a good time! Your girls DO pose a lot....and they dress REALLY cute for hiking (I can't bash too much, I'm kind of the same way)

Glad you got your spring off on the right foot.
